How fees work
  • Mercari charges a flat 10% selling fee regardless of category, plus 2.9% + $0.50 payment processing on the full sale.
  • If buyer pays shipping and Mercari provides the label, shipping is included in the fee base. If you ship independently, it's not.
  • Goal seek solves the sale price that hits your target profit, net payout, or margin exactly.

How Mercari fees work

Mercari keeps its fee structure refreshingly simple compared to eBay or Etsy: 10% selling fee on every sale, plus 2.9% + $0.50 payment processing. No category variations, no tier breaks, no seller-performance penalties. A $50 item pays $5 selling + $1.95 processing = $6.95 total regardless of whether it's a tee shirt, an electronic, or a collectible.

The biggest source of confusion is shipping. If the buyer pays for a Mercari shipping label at checkout, that label cost is part of the transaction — and Mercari charges its 10% on the combined price+shipping. If you ship yourself and buyer pays you directly or shipping was free, the fee base is just the item price. Flip the 'Mercari ships' toggle based on your arrangement.

Frequently asked questions

Does Mercari charge different rates for different categories?
No. Mercari's 10% selling fee applies to every category — clothing, electronics, books, collectibles, anything. This is refreshingly simple compared to eBay's 14 different category rates. Payment processing is also flat at 2.9% + $0.50 regardless of what you sold.
What's Mercari's break-even price?
Because the $0.50 fixed fee is independent of sale price, small sales lose disproportionately. A $5 sale pays $0.50 + $0.145 + $0.50 = $1.145 in fees — 23% of the sale. Break-even versus listing elsewhere usually kicks in around $10. Below $5 you're often better off bundling items.
Does Mercari charge sales tax?
Mercari collects and remits sales tax as a marketplace facilitator in most US states. Unlike eBay, Mercari does NOT charge selling fees on the sales tax amount — the 10% selling fee applies only to price + (optional) shipping. Tax is a pure pass-through.
When does shipping affect fees?
If the buyer uses a Mercari shipping label (Mercari provides a prepaid label at checkout), the shipping cost is added to the transaction total AND the 10% fee base. If you ship yourself with your own label, shipping doesn't enter Mercari's fee calculation. Use the 'Mercari ships' toggle to model the right scenario.
