How to read this calculator
  • Transaction fee (6.5%) is charged on price + shipping + gift wrap combined.
  • Offsite Ads fee applies ONLY on sales that actually came through Etsy's offsite advertising. Sellers under $10k/year in gross sales can't opt out (15%); over $10k can opt in at 12%.
  • Etsy charges a small regulatory operating fee that varies by country (0.25% in US/UK; 0.40–1.10% in parts of EU).

How Etsy fees stack up

Etsy's fee model is simpler than eBay's but still has multiple layers. Every sale pays a 6.5% transaction fee on price + shipping + gift wrap combined, plus payment processing (3% + $0.25 in the US), plus a small regulatory operating fee (0.25% in the US, higher in parts of the EU). Listings cost $0.20 every four months whether they sell or not.

Offsite Ads are where many sellers get confused. If Etsy sends your listing to an offsite ad network and a shopper buys through that ad, you owe a 15% fee (12% for high-volume sellers). You only pay when the ad actually drives a sale — but sellers under $10k/year can't opt out of the program.

Frequently asked questions

Why is Etsy's transaction fee applied to shipping?
Etsy's 6.5% transaction fee applies to the full amount the buyer paid — item price plus shipping plus gift wrap. This catches many sellers off guard, since they think of shipping as pass-through. The fee structure is why some sellers price shipping into the item and offer 'free shipping' — the math is the same either way.
Can I opt out of Offsite Ads?
Only if your trailing 12-month gross sales are $10,000+ in USD. Sellers under that threshold are auto-enrolled at 15% — they pay the fee only when a sale actually came via an offsite ad placement, but they can't prevent their listings from appearing in those ads. Sellers over $10k can opt in at 12% or stay out entirely.
How long do Etsy listings stay active?
Listings expire after 4 months or when the item sells. Renewing costs another $0.20 insertion fee. Etsy does offer auto-renew; if you don't want to keep paying for listings that aren't moving, turn auto-renew off in your Shop Manager.
What's the regulatory operating fee?
A small percentage Etsy charges to cover tax and compliance costs in regulated countries. US/UK = 0.25%, Germany/Spain = 0.40%, Italy = 0.90%, France = 1.10%. This calculator lets you pick your country to model the correct rate.
Does Etsy charge sales tax like eBay?
Etsy collects and remits sales tax in most US states as a 'marketplace facilitator.' Unlike eBay, Etsy does NOT charge its transaction fee on the sales tax amount — the transaction fee base is price + shipping + gift wrap only. Tax passes through cleanly.
